Overview
This course examines how we can best manage the mistreatment of animals by humans. It will be particularly useful those working in environments where animal cruelty cases may be encountered, such as veterinary clinics, animal shelters or dog training and behaviour services. How societies think about cruelty and abuse is based on expectations and cultural influences. To tease out the threads of this entanglement, the course aims to present information from the dog's perspective. It encourages the understanding of suffering, what makes humans abuse dogs, why it often goes unreported or punished, and how perceptions of animal cruelty feed into society’s feelings of vulnerability. This course is intended to encourage the learner to understand how and why animal abuse happens, and to humanise the canine victims, so their voices might be heard. Unpacking this critical subject will help you to consider, discuss and argue for improvements to the disconnected relationships we have with dogs. The time frame for completion of this course is 2 years.
